Our first project was a camera shots / angles quiz. We had to get in groups of two and take 15 shots using the angles and shot types we learned in class. We also had to come up with our own story with the main subject being 1 or 2 inanimate objects and take the shots in class or at school.
I immediately began thinking of inanimate objects I had that could be interesting. I had a pen that had run out of ink and thought it could make for an interesting story. We storyboarded for 10 minutes and then begun taking shots. The story follows a broken pen that is used, discarded and replaced by the student. We also tried to add a level of depth by starting and ending with very similar long shots of the classroom door, and the "replacement" pen is never shown as working, which could create the perception of a loop. We used a wide variety of shots, including over the shoulder, midshot, longshot, POV, close up, and extreme close up as well as low and high angles.
One thing I would have done differently if I had more time was tell the story more from the perspective of the pen more. The POV shots used were from the student's POV but the pen's POV would have made for a cooler story that was more focused on the pen. However, I think we did well in telling the story by using different shots and not overusing any one shot. Overall, we did good for the time we had and it was a good first experience.
